Where the three towns sit

St. Hedwig (ZIP 78152) lies along FM 1346 near the spot where Martinez Creek joins Cibolo Creek. Silesian families settled it in the 1850s around what became the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish, and the city incorporated in 1957. The 2020 census counted 2,227 residents.

Adkins (ZIP 78101) is an unincorporated community. It began in the 1880s as a railroad flag stop, sits on FM 1518 and Loop 1604, and grew as San Antonio spread east along the loop.

China Grove (ZIP 78263) is a town of 1,141 people (2020 census) on US 87, the same highway as our La Vernia shop. Settled around 1900, it incorporated in the 1960s. All three are East Central ISD communities.

Wells, septic tanks and long buried lines

Older farmhouses, newer homes on big lots and a few subdivisions share these roads, so two neighbors can have very different plumbing:

  • Well water. The pump house feeds a buried line that may run a long way to the house, a shop or a barn. We trace and repair leaks on that line.
  • Septic. Plenty of homes here drain to a tank instead of a city sewer. We clear and repair the line to the tank.
  • Scale and soil. Hard water scales up heaters and shower valves, and the shrink-swell clay common around San Antonio strains slabs and buried pipe.

Who supplies your water, and which pipes are yours

The City of China Grove lists San Antonio Water System (SAWS) as its water provider. Elsewhere, homes may be on East Central SUD, a district serving parts of Bexar, Wilson and Guadalupe counties east of San Antonio, or on their own wells. The supplier on your bill looks after the meter and the street side of it; from the meter to the house, under the slab and out to each fixture, the repair is a plumbing job.

Plumbing work we do out here

Emergencies and cold snaps out east

Phone us the moment a pipe bursts, sewage backs up or water won't stop. Until the plumber gets there:

  1. Stop the supply: close the meter-box valve on SAWS or district water, or the shutoff just past the pressure tank on a well.
  2. On a well, flip off the well pump breaker so the pump quits feeding the break.
  3. On septic, hold off on flushing, showers and laundry until the line is clear.

Pump houses, barn hose bibs and pipes in crawl spaces freeze before anything else on a rural lot. Wrap them early using the freeze prep checklist, and see burst pipe steps or frozen pipes.

Smell gas? Leave the building first. Don't flip switches or light anything. Once you're outside, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line (CPS Energy in San Antonio and China Grove), or your propane supplier if your home runs on propane. Then call us.

Plumbing questions from east Bexar County

Can you fix the line from my well house?

Yes. We find and repair leaks on the buried pipe between the pump house and the home, barn or shop, and replace runs that keep breaking. The well, pump, pressure tank and controls go to a well company.

Do you pump septic tanks?

No. We clear and repair the sewer line from the house to the tank and can show its condition on camera. Pumping, tank work and drain fields are done by septic companies licensed by or registered with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

Will my job need a permit?

That depends on the job and the address. China Grove has its own permits and inspections office, St. Hedwig is an incorporated city with its own rules, and Adkins is unincorporated county land. Where a permit applies, the plumber doing the work pulls the permit.

Who handles a leak at my water meter?

The supplier named on your water bill: SAWS in China Grove, or East Central SUD or another system elsewhere. From the meter to the house the pipe is the owner's, and we repair leaks there. If you have no water bill and no meter, you're on a private well and every pipe on the property is yours.
