If sewage is coming up through a tub or shower drain, stop using water everywhere in the house right now. The blockage is nearly always in the line carrying wastewater out to the city sewer or, on acreage, a septic tank.

Sewage in the tub right now? Keep kids and pets out and call (830) 475-2604 at any hour; we send our on-call plumber right away.

First, stop sending water down any drain

A plugged main can't carry new water away, so whatever goes into a sink, toilet or washer comes back up in the tub. One flush can lift it over the rim.

  1. Tell everyone at home. A note on each toilet lid stops habit flushes.
  2. Cancel any washer or dishwasher cycle.
  3. Skip the plunger and drain opener. Neither reaches a yard-line clog, and chemicals in standing sewage make cleanup riskier.
  4. On septic, every gallon you hold back stays out of a tank that may already be full.

Why the lowest drain overflows first

Every fixture drains by gravity into one building drain that exits under the foundation as the sewer line. When that pipe plugs, wastewater backs up inside it to the lowest opening. On a slab home that's normally the tub or shower, whose drain sits nearer the floor than a sink or toilet bowl. Clues that the main is blocked:

  • Drains in several rooms turn sluggish together
  • A toilet gurgles while the sink or washer drains
  • Dirty water appears in the tub after every flush

A tub that just drains slowly with its own soapy water usually has hair in its trap, a routine drain cleaning job.

Main line clog, city sewer or septic tank?

Your own sewer line

The usual culprit. Wipes, paper towels, kitchen grease and roots in old joints collect between the house and the street or tank, and a sunken stretch of pipe, called a belly, keeps clogging.

The public sewer

Under its service rules, the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) maintains the lateral from its main to the property line; the owner maintains the rest, back to the house. SAWS asks owners to have a licensed plumber clear the private side and to report the backup so a crew can check its main. In La Vernia, sewer collection is a Public Works job, and the city website lists that department's on-call emergency line.

A full or failing septic tank

Plenty of acreage around La Vernia, St. Hedwig, Adkins and Floresville drains to a septic tank. An overdue tank or a saturated drain field pushes sewage back up the house line, and it shows in the tub first. Other EPA warning signs: gurgling drains, damp spots or sewage odor near the tank or field, and lush grass over the field even in dry weather.

Pumping is septic company work: Texas requires anyone hauling septic tank waste to register with the TCEQ, and repairing a tank or drain field takes a TCEQ-licensed septic installer. Our part is the drain pipe from the house out to the tank inlet. If that pipe is clear and the tank still won't take water, you need a septic company.

The cleanout: know where it is, don't open it

A cleanout is a short capped pipe giving direct access to the sewer line, usually outside near the foundation or along the line's path across the yard. On septic homes, Texas rules call for a two-way cleanout between the house and the tank, plus one every 100 feet on long runs. Loosening the cap on a full line can spray sewage across the yard, so leave it to the plumber, who reads it first: sewage standing inside means the stoppage is farther out, and a dry one puts it between there and the house. The cable machine goes in through that opening, or through a pulled toilet where there's no cleanout.

Camera inspection: what caused it

Clearing gets the tub draining but doesn't explain the stoppage. During a video camera inspection, a waterproof camera travels the line and shows roots at joints, a belly, cracked or separated pipe, grease, or a clean run to the city tap or tank inlet. A transmitter in the camera head lets the plumber mark each problem's spot and depth from above ground. Roots, breaks and bellies come back until the pipe is fixed; the footage shows where a sewer line repair belongs, booked for a day that suits you. Two coupons fit here: a sewer inspection costs $50 less, and the dispatch fee drops to $0 when we do a repair or replacement.

Safety and cleanup basics

Sewage carries germs that can make people sick, so treat anything it touched as contaminated. From CDC cleanup guidance:

  • Wear rubber gloves, rubber boots and goggles, and keep children and pets out until cleanup is finished.
  • Keep everyone away from outlets, cords or appliances the water touched. Flip the main breaker only from dry ground; if getting to the panel means wading, leave it to an electrician.
  • Throw out mats and anything that can't be washed and disinfected, and remove drywall or insulation that sewage soaked.
  • Scrub the floor, tub and fixtures with hot water and laundry or dish detergent, then disinfect with household bleach diluted as its label says. Use it on its own, since bleach combined with ammonia or other cleaners gives off toxic fumes.

If sewage reached carpet or spread past the bathroom, call a water damage restoration company.

Questions about tub and shower backups

Is a sewage backup in the tub an emergency?

Yes. Raw sewage indoors is a health hazard, and every flush adds to it. Call (830) 475-2604 at any hour; for sewage in the house we send our on-call plumber right away.

Do you pump septic tanks?

No. Pumping and tank or drain field repairs are septic company work. We clear and repair the line from the house to the tank, and a camera shows whether the blockage sits in that pipe or in the tank.

Could the backup be in the city's sewer instead of mine?

It could. If sewage keeps rising while no one uses water, or nearby homes back up at the same time, report it to SAWS in San Antonio or to Public Works inside La Vernia. If they find their main clear, the clog is on your side and we clear it.

The tub drained down on its own. Is the problem gone?

Probably not. Water can seep past a partial blockage, and the next load of laundry can bring it back. Keep water use minimal until the line is cleared.
